　この曲はムードがジム・ジャームッシュJim Jarmuschの映画 Down by law(1986)のオープニングでトム・ウェイツが歌っていたJocky full of Bourbonにテイストがよく似ています。ウェイツもコーエンも深い味わいの「声」はイコンのような記号です。

　レナード・コーエンをもう一つ。
 この歌詞は一部意味が曖昧なただのラブソングと理解できるのですが、WIKIによると、この曲はホロコーストにインスパイアされて作ったとコーエンがインタビューで言っていたそうです。
　収容所で多くのユダヤ人がガス室に送り込まれ、殺され、焼かれていく間、同じユダヤ人の弦楽カルテットがその側で演奏させられていたことをこの曲に刻印したようです。
　to the end of love（愛が終わるまで）とは「愛は終わらない」という大前提を踏まえて「いつまでも永遠に」と 「仲間たちの命が終わるまで」とを重層的に意味しているのでしょう。
