　チェット・ベイカーは Almost blue と My funny Valentine とでニーズの80％を満たすと以前書きましたが、その次がこれです。とりあえず訳してみたのですが、歌詞のシチュエーション、内容が今ひとつはっきりしません。誤訳はご容赦ください。

　ダイアー・ストレイツの Sultans of Swing『悲しきサルタン』は初めて聴いたとき、そうそうこういうのが好きだったんだというデジャビュdéjàvu 感がありました。

Fragile : Sting

　この曲が含まれたLPアルバムNothing like the sunはよく聴きましたが、ライナーに書かれたその日本語訳が確か「太陽なんて目じゃない」となっていました。愛する女性に対して捧げる言葉だから、これでつじつまが合ってはいるようでしたが、この英語なら「太陽のようなものなんてない➡太陽が最高➡太陽には及ばない」のはずで、これでは愛する人と太陽の優劣の関係が逆になります。文法的には誤訳のようだが、変だなと思っていました。

　その後、だいぶ経ってからこの表現が使われたシェイクスピアのソネットを読む機会があり、謎が解けました。

　このソネットが書かれた時代、多くの人が愛する女性を白々しく「太陽、月、花、・・・」と月並みな喩え方をしていたようです。これは現在でもよく使われるメタファーですが、シェイクスピアはそのような凡庸な表現スタイルを背景に、「わたしの愛する人は太陽にはまったく及ばない。しかし、だれよりも素晴らしい人だ」というひとひねり加えた讃え方をしています。さすがです。

　小学校で国語教師をしていたスティングがひじょうに好んだシェークスピアの言葉だそうで、なるほどと思えます。
